What is a Battery Storage System?

Artboard 31.png

A battery energy storage system charges during periods of low demand or high renewable output, then discharges that stored power back to the grid when demand rises or generation drops. This dispatch capability is what makes BESS valuable independent of weather. A solar or wind project generates power on the resource's schedule. A battery discharges on the grid's schedule.

That distinction matters for grid operators managing the mismatch between when renewable energy is generated and when it's actually needed. Battery storage smooths that mismatch, reducing strain during peak hours and cutting the risk of demand-driven outages.

Battery energy storage systems, or BESS, strengthen grid reliability by storing electricity when supply is high and costs are lower, then delivering that energy back when demand increases. This helps balance fluctuations in energy use and supports a more stable, efficient power system.

Unlike generation assets, BESS does not produce electricity. Instead, it captures and stores energy from the grid, making it available at the times it is needed most.

Land
Efficient

Community-scale battery storage projects are built with a small footprint and are often sited close to existing grid infrastructure, minimizing land use and maximizing efficiency.

Grid
Reliable

Battery storage captures electricity and supplies it during peak demand or unexpected outages, helping keep the grid stable and operating smoothly.

Energy
Flexible

By adjusting to shifts in electricity usage, battery storage enables utilities to better balance supply and demand, supporting more efficient and cost-effective energy delivery.

Why Landowners Are Leasing Land for Battery Storage

Artboard 31.png

Smaller Footprint, Comparable Income

Solar and wind need substantial acreage to reach meaningful output. Battery storage doesn't. A site too small or irregular for a solar array can still be a strong candidate for battery storage, which is why ECA evaluates every parcel for both uses.

How a Battery Storage Lease Works

The process starts with a lease or purchase option agreement, giving ECA time to complete permitting, interconnection studies, and site design. Once the project reaches commercial operation, ECA handles construction and ongoing operations while the landowner receives lease payments on the agreed schedule.

The right structure depends on parcel size, location, and whether you'd rather retain ownership or sell outright. See land leasing or land purchase for how each works.

Battery Storage Landowner Benefits

Predictable Income

Earn steady, long-term lease payments that are not tied to crop yields or market swings

No Maintenance

Once operational, projects require little to no maintenance from the landowner.

Preserves Land Value

Projects are designed to be fully decommissioned at the end of the term, returning the land to its original condition.

Site Size & Terrain

Properties with .05-3+ acres of relatively flat, usable land are typically best suited for development.

Zoning

Properties located in areas zoned for commercial, industrial, or mixed-use are typically strong candidates for development.

Grid Access

Sites located within 1–2 miles of an existing substation are typically strong candidates for development.

Frequently Asked Questions About Energy Storage

Considering a battery storage project on your land? Start with answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

A battery energy storage system stores electricity and delivers it back to the grid when it is needed most, helping improve reliability and efficiency.

How do energy storage systems work?

Battery storage helps balance the grid by storing excess energy and supplying it during peak demand, reducing strain on infrastructure and supporting a more stable energy system.

Why are battery storage projects needed?

Battery storage projects are long-term investments, often operating for 20+ years, with decommissioning plans in place at the end of the project life.

How long do these projects last?

Yes. Projects are designed and operated in accordance with strict safety standards, including fire safety systems and coordination with local emergency responders.

Are battery storage systems safe?
